Moving in line with the Year of Giving Initiative and Ramadan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE and ruler of Dubai has directed authorities to exempt motorists from having their vehicle impounded for minor traffic offenses unless they have any major driving offenses committed in the past. The new rule is only applicable to vehicles registered in Dubai. As part of the same order, previously impounded vehicles can also be released after serving half of the specified impoundment period. However, reckless driving, racing on the road, and jumping the traffic light do not fall under the scope of the new rule.

Other cities in UAE, like Abu Dhabi are also following similar practices where motorists can now keep their vehicles impounded at their own premises instead of the police-designated impounding yards. This is achieved by installing a small tracking device inside the impounded car to alert the police in case of any movement of the car while serving the impoundment period. Any violations in the impoundment terms, will result in consequential actions like cancellation of home impoundment and confiscation of the car by the police.

Even after easing the rule on motorists in Dubai, there are many chances of getting your car confiscated if you do not comply by the specified rules. Here are the steps to go by to ensure a smooth and safe release of your impounded car in Dubai –

1. Submit copies of required documents like Driving License, Vehicle Ownership Document etc to the Finance and Controls Division of the Traffic Department

2. Pay all the applicable fines

3. Receive a clearance letter to release the vehicle

4. Release the impounded vehicle.

Each delayed day will add a specified amount as fine to the existing penalty. So, make sure to complete all the procedures at the earliest to avoid paying any excess fines. If you do not have the time and energy to complete all the required procedures yourself and do not want to attract any additional fines, You can also authorise any of the companies that take care of all car related formalities in Dubai to release your car without you having to be present at the time.
